USA: RoboCop statue installed after 15 years of planning
After almost 15 years of planning, an 11-foot-tall bronze statue of science fiction hero RoboCop has been installed in the United States.
The two-and-a-half-ton statue was installed outside the FreeAge Production Studio in Detroit, Michigan, on Wednesday.
Studio owner Jim Toscano told local media that it was "awesome and very impressive." Many people have come to see it.
The story of the statue began in 2011 when then-Detroit Mayor Dave Bing responded to a tweet suggesting a RoboCop statue be installed in the city.
The mayor's tweet (which has now been deleted) said that there were no plans to install the statue. However, due to the exchange of tweets, RoboCop fans started a campaign to make the artwork a reality.
Imagination Station board president Brandon Vallee and Lowland Technology co-founder and CEO Jerry Pfendorf launched a Kickstarter campaign and raised $67,436 for the cause.
The statue was completed in 2017, but its installation was delayed, partly due to legal clearance from MGM (which owns the rights to the character).
